How the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) Works 

What is the eligibility criteria? 

To be eligible you must have a child enrolled in an Australian school (up to year 12) and live in an area serviceable by nbn® through a standard connection. You will not qualify if you have an active service now or in the past 14-days (Mobile services does not impact eligibility).

How do I participate in SSBI?

Eligible families with school-aged children can be nominated by participating schools, education authorities, charities, and community organizations. Parents and schools can also contact the National Referral Centre to check eligibility on 1800 954 610. Let Skymesh know your eligibility voucher code once you receive and get connected for FREE.

What is SSBI?  

This SSBI initiative is a landmark step forward in providing equal opportunities for students and families, no matter where they live in Australia or how much they earn. The scheme sign up period ends on the 30th December 2025 or until 30k services are connected (whichever occurs first). The program runs until the 30th June 2028.

How does the SSBI benefit students and families?

How to check your eligibility and participate in SSBI

Many families face challenges when it comes to keeping their children connected to schoolwork, especially when the cost of home internet adds extra pressure. The School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) is here to help. By providing free home internet for eligible students, SSBI makes it easier for families to support their children’s education.

For students in low-income households or those living in remote areas, this student internet program offers a chance to stay engaged with their teachers, keep up with their lessons and access resources that are crucial for learning. This program is part of a wider government effort to make education accessible for everyone. 

Through the nbn® network and the help of participating organisations, the SSBI free internet program connects families with the tools they need to support their children’s learning journey.

If you have a school-aged child enrolled in an Australian school, you don’t have an active nbn network internet service now or in the past 14 days, and you live on premises that can access the nbn network via a standard connection, you may be eligible. 

The process to apply is simple, with two ways to join the program: through a nominating organisation or by self-nominating via the National Referral Centre. Here’s how you can get started with free home internet for students: 

Option #1: You can be identified and referred by a nominating organisation.

If your family qualifies, a participating school, education authority, charity or community organisation can nominate you. Once you’re nominated, here are the steps that follow: 

1. Receive your voucher. Once nominated and approved, you will receive a letter containing a unique voucher number and a list of participating SSBI providers in your area.

2. Use your voucher to connect. Reach out to a participating internet provider, such as Skymesh, and submit your voucher. Vouchers can only be used once and must match the address listed. They cannot be transferred to another household.

Option #2: You can self-nominate through the National Referral Centre.

If you haven’t been nominated, you can check your eligibility and apply on your own.

1. Contact the National Referral Centre. Call 1800 954 610 (Monday to Friday, 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. AEDT) or visit the National Referral Centre website. They also offer call-back, webchat and interpreting services.

2. Check if you qualify. The National Referral Centre will confirm if your household meets the eligibility criteria by verifying your residential address and asking a few simple questions.

Redeem your voucher. If you qualify, you’ll receive a voucher to redeem with a participating internet provider.

How to get connected for FREE
